Mia Fileman (00:08.403)
Voicemails for Isabel was eighty seven percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Did it deserve that score, Jerry?
Gerri Florence (00:17.08)
For me, I would have given it probably maybe a fifty percent. For me, definitely not.
Mia Fileman (00:25.237)
Well, let's get into it. Welcome back to another episode of Off Script.
Gerri Florence (00:31.192)
So apparently two thousand rom coms are back.
Mia Fileman (00:34.911)
They are so back and I'm so here for it. So good.
Gerri Florence (00:38.894)
I don't mind a little bit of, you know, nostalgia from the two thousands. I went and watched the Devil Wears Prada two and loved it for all of that. But I did think it still updated things a little bit. do you think voicemails for Isabel was a twenty twenty six updated version of the two thousand rom cups?
Mia Fileman (00:58.794)
So let's start with some context. So, Voicemails for Isabel was also a female writer. So far on this potty, we have talked about off-campus and heated rivalry, both from female writers. And I do think, Joey, that there is just something about the way that women write romances that I am 100% here for.
Gerri Florence (01:08.779)
Mm.
Gerri Florence (01:26.83)
Okay, I I appreciate that. episode four might not be, but I think so far you you're on the mark. and why female writers can produce that type of romance. Voicemause for Isabel was written by a is it sorry, sh stop. Is this a book?
Mia Fileman (01:48.976)
I think it was.
Gerri Florence (01:50.35)
Is it a book? Okay.
Mia Fileman (01:51.986)
Maybe not.
Mia Fileman (01:55.762)
I'll find out.
Gerri Florence (01:56.814)
That's okay.
Mia Fileman (01:58.855)
It's not a book.
Gerri Florence (02:00.032)
It's not book. Okay. Is it a female director?
Mia Fileman (02:03.792)
Yeah, and Ryder, Leah McKendrick. Yeah.
Gerri Florence (02:06.069)
Okay, cool. All right. So female writer and director for Voicemails for Isabel, but it wasn't originally a book. So it went straight into into the film. And I don't know if I'm a bit of a victim of the fact that we've been watching a lot of limited series and in those types of shows. You can get so much more character development and so much more into the characters, where I feel like voicemails for Isabel.
Mia Fileman (02:16.743)
No.
Gerri Florence (02:34.593)
just had to lean into some of those tropes of a romantic comedy. but I just think I needed a little bit more time between watching some of those other shows that I've loved and watching this so that it landed a little bit better for me.
Mia Fileman (02:47.853)
Same. Also, this movie has almost the exact same plot as another movie that was released not that long ago in 2023. Yes, so the movie is called Love Again. And let me tell I'll read you the description of the movie. Alright? And you tell me if it sounds familiar. Mira is a young woman trying to move past the pain of her fiancé John's death.
Gerri Florence (02:59.159)
No.
Mia Fileman (03:16.251)
two years earlier by sending texts to his old cell phone number and she eventually forms a connection with Rob, the man to whom the number has been reassigned.
Gerri Florence (03:27.379)
Okay. That sounds very familiar.
Mia Fileman (03:28.814)
Right. Very familiar. Now I watched this movie. It stars Sam Hewen of Outlander fame, which is the only reason I watch this movie. It also stars Priyanka Chopra and wait for it, Celine Dion in her yes. Yes. This is her she acted.
Gerri Florence (03:43.594)
Yes, please.
Gerri Florence (03:51.853)
Proud Canadian she acts in it.
Mia Fileman (03:57.248)
In it, yes, this is her feature feature film debut, if you will. And that's probably what put me off watching Love Again. Yeah, it was kind of a flop. It got 30% on the tomato meter, but audiences seem to love it. 91% on the popcorn meter. so voicemails for Isabel has done markedly better, at least on
Gerri Florence (03:58.88)
Getting very bizarre.
Gerri Florence (04:05.826)
Yeah. Stick to your line, Selene.
Gerri Florence (04:19.086)
Mm-hmm.
Mia Fileman (04:25.463)
Rotten tomatoes and my algorithm.
Gerri Florence (04:27.778)
Yes, absolutely. And I now need to go deep dive into whether they talk about that film being an inspiration for theirs, because it should.
Mia Fileman (04:40.101)
Well, I saw that the writer director Leah said that voicemails for Isabel was inspired by the relationship with her own sister. I don't know if the voicemails part or the cystic fibrosis part or the death of a sibling or just the relationship part, but I was a that that was the first thing that screamed to me when I saw the
Gerri Florence (04:56.558)
Okay.
Mia Fileman (05:05.549)
The trailer for voicemas for Isabel, I was like, I feel like I've seen this before.
Gerri Florence (05:11.8)
So maybe we're being a bit harsh. I d I don't want to start off negative, because we did both love the sister relationship in this film. It was the hero for me. I thought the way that they looked after each other as as young kids, you know, and we see those earlier scenes and those kind of taking you through the different eras of of their sisterhood was really beautiful and the love was really there. I love how she really defended her to that dickhead little kid who said she smelled like cancer.
Mia Fileman (05:19.063)
Yeah. Yeah.
Gerri Florence (05:41.408)
Whatever it may be. yeah, I I just thought that that was a really strong depiction and that the film did a good job of actually building their relationship over those years.
Mia Fileman (05:51.681)
Yeah, I loved the sister relationship. I love the awareness for cystic fibrosis as well. we do know a lot about cancers, but this seems to be something that has I haven't seen another film where a lead character has cystic fibrosis. One of my favorite things about the relationship between the two sisters was how they spoke to each other, my my lad, my dude, but how they used
Gerri Florence (06:01.816)
Mm-hmm.
Gerri Florence (06:17.022)
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (06:19.069)
lines from famous movies to talk to each other. And I loved the notebook. the I if I'm a bird, you're a bird too.
Gerri Florence (06:26.382)
I mean it if I'm a bird, me yeah, you're a bird too. Yeah.
Mia Fileman (06:30.848)
you too. Yeah, yeah. Me too. Me too.
Gerri Florence (06:34.52)
Think that I it's it's so classic us, like the nostalgia factor. Like it's it ropes us in every timing. We're really suckers for that, aren't we?
Mia Fileman (06:42.87)
Well, I f I just feel like it's just written for us, Jerry. Like you mentioned A Walk to Remember and I'm back to watching a very young Mandy Moore playing in that movie, mentions You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary, The Lion King, The Fault in Our Stars. so good. So good.
Gerri Florence (07:00.898)
Simba.
Gerri Florence (07:04.6)
Yeah. So I thought that that was clever and really gave their relationship a bit of realness. I I think in all of our relationships we all have these nuances with our partners or with our, you know, close girlfriends that are in jokes that kind of define that relationship. And I think that that represented the for the two sisters really well, along with the dance, obviously the choreographed dance that they that they learn as kids that it's a big form of the sisters entertainment.
that that brings them back to being kind of really real characters. And I think that relationship is one of the only ones in the a film that I thought was really real.
Mia Fileman (07:39.476)
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (07:45.269)
Yeah, I agree. Totally. Mm.
Gerri Florence (07:48.111)
so that's good. We found some things that we loved.
Mia Fileman (07:51.464)
I also really loved the scene with the live podcast and Tyler. That was one of my favorite scenes because it's just so true. Everyone has a podcast, including us. but like the douchebaggery of it was just, it was just so perfect. and then yeah, the what she stands up and says like if it walks like a duck, swims like a duck, then it's probably just a bargain bin.
Hugh Grant, fuck boy with the podcast. I was like, What Fuck Boy with the Podcast is so good.
Gerri Florence (08:23.296)
Point with the podcast.
Gerri Florence (08:27.864)
It was ex excellent line. Yeah, I think that landed really, really well. so what about the things that we not so much loved?
Mia Fileman (08:30.291)
Yeah. Yeah.
Mia Fileman (08:38.547)
hang on, there was one other thing that I loved that I have to mention. So The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorite movies of all time. Have you seen it, Jerry?
Gerri Florence (08:47.406)
Okay. Well, I'm a reformed English teacher, Mia. Fifteen years teaching high school English. I have watched and taught the Shashank Redemption more times than anyone would care to admit. and absolutely appreciate it for it's it's just a fantastic, absolutely fantastic film, but I cannot watch it again for this podcast. I'm so I'm sorry.
Mia Fileman (08:52.915)
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (09:10.814)
good, good. No need to watch it again. But Gil Bellows, the actor, war is the dad in voicemails for Isabel. It's Isab it's Isabel and Liz. Is it Liz?
Mia Fileman (09:29.874)
Yes? Yes. Jill, Jill, what am I saying? Jill. Jill, Jill and Isabel's dad, the actor that plays Isabel and Jill's dad is Gil Bellows, who's in the Shawshank Redemption. And I just love when you like, my goodness, that face is so familiar, where do I know it from? And then they bring in actors that were like big in, you know, the
Gerri Florence (09:36.118)
Sorry, jail.
Gerri Florence (09:59.64)
Right.
Mia Fileman (09:59.847)
Two thousands and they yeah, they give them roles in
Gerri Florence (10:02.496)
It has someone who's f taught the film fifteen times. I didn't pick up on it. So now I'm like, shit, I gotta go back and look and look at that Mia Euris. I'm so bad with celebrities and names. It's it's not gonna be my strength on this show. You're gonna have to carry all the weight there.
Mia Fileman (10:08.144)
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (10:18.545)
I've got us. I'm I will I carry the load. I I will not r forget a face. Will not. Yep. All right, so not so loved. What did you not so love about voicemails for Isabel?
Gerri Florence (10:24.462)
Okay. Brilliant.
Gerri Florence (10:32.888)
So my the biggest thing I hated was every scene that they set in Jill's kitchen with that really stereotypical toxic chef doing a very kind of Gordon Ramsey style of running the kitchen, the weird relationship with the guy that she had sex with once that cried, like the whole thing I thought. Yeah, I wasn't I wasn't bobbing that.
Mia Fileman (10:52.764)
That's yeah.
Gerri Florence (10:58.264)
probably went and was like scrolling Instagram or something during a lot of those scenes because it just it really made me mad and I felt like it cheapened the the movie quite a bit. She she didn't need that on top of everything else that was going on in her life. And it wasn't actually, I think, the driving thing that pushed her to explore her dream of dessert tacos.
Mia Fileman (11:21.338)
Yeah, I think they were trying to 'cause it was quite heavy, right? With the sister passing. They were trying to bring in the humour, but it wasn't funny at all. I didn't find any of those scenes funny.
Gerri Florence (11:32.456)
No. No, the red haired pube on the cupcake? no. No. Okay.
Mia Fileman (11:35.589)
No. Nakama pots no not.
For me, the entire movie had a pacing issue. The timeline made no sense. Like how did Wes end up with Isabel's not Isabel's Jill's phone sorry, Isabel's phone number two seconds after she died? Like there needed to be some time. Yeah, it was literally like
Gerri Florence (11:54.669)
Yeah, is it well?
Gerri Florence (11:59.523)
Yeah.
Like the parents went and cancelled that straight away? Is that the first thing you do?
Mia Fileman (12:08.006)
Next minute. She's dead. He's got the phone number. It made no sense. Same deal with when he picks her up. She's fallen asleep on the couch. He picks her up and he takes her to her bed and he places her on her side. And then we do see some like yellow light, which is supposed to be like the sun rising, but she hasn't moved an inch. And humans, that's not how we sleep. And it, I don't know, it needed to kind of
Gerri Florence (12:31.726)
Yeah.
It is not.
Mia Fileman (12:38.361)
pan out to like a sunrise and a something else and then come back to her in the bed and she's in a similar but not the exact same pom position. It looked like they had not even cut the tape. Like the scene was was still rolling.
Gerri Florence (12:52.45)
Yeah. Yes. And that I think as you said, it's a pacing issue. There was quite a number of big jumps, despite the fact that they kinda had those year after year montages at the top when they kind of span different eras. But then she sticks up for that other female chef in the kitchen and the woman brushes her off and gives her nothing. And which seemed to fit, you know, the toxic kitchen scene. But then all of a sudden
Bam, she shows up at her dessert truck to work. And I'm like, whoa, pump the brakes. Where did that relationship develop? How didn't she even have her number? They kind of seemed like they didn't have any real connection outside of work. So I just didn't buy it.
Mia Fileman (13:35.053)
I didn't buy it either. Also, as someone who loves food, she didn't eat anything. She cooked dinner for Wes. She made like an entree and then she made him the chicken pot pie. She didn't eat anything. And I was like, I don't believe I don't buy anything. I don't buy this. This is not right. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. I will also say, I please people are gonna come for me and that's okay.
Gerri Florence (13:52.558)
Me would be tucking in to all of that.
Mia Fileman (14:05.012)
Nick Robinson is a sensational actor. Fantastic. I just don't think he was right for this. And he plays the romantic partner of Jill. He plays Wes. There is something deceptive about his face, which made him a good fit for you know betraying her with the voicemails, but he just wasn't the right pick for me. And then I did a bit of a deep dive, Jerry, and he is.
Gerri Florence (14:32.91)
As you do.
Mia Fileman (14:34.259)
He is the same actor that was in Maid, you know, that really heavy Netflix show about domestic violence, and he played the abuser opposite Margaret Qually qualie. And he was amazing in that role. Like so good. I'm sorry, but it I think he's a bad he needs just bad boy characters. Just like you can't put Tom Hanks as a
Gerri Florence (14:41.24)
Yeah.
Gerri Florence (14:49.848)
Mm-hmm.
Right.
Mia Fileman (15:04.075)
bad character, I don't think you can put Nick Robinson as like the heart.
Gerri Florence (15:09.42)
Yeah. And I I did I thought he was mildly attractive. I wasn't he's not exactly my my Scott Hunter type. But I fe that's a bit of a even harder sell when he was shady. He was deceptive. I'm like I didn't really trust you anyway. And then something about him just gave me that that ick factor. Like I definitely didn't whilst I I enjoy the movie. It wasn't like painful to watch the whole thing by any means.
Mia Fileman (15:28.02)
Yeah.
Gerri Florence (15:37.162)
I wasn't in it for for him. I just I didn't I didn't buy it. His character changed, the way he carried himself, the creepy showing up on the bench just stalker style. Weird.
Mia Fileman (15:51.379)
Yeah. All right, so go with me here. I have a suggestion for an alternative to Nick Robinson. I do. I've done I've done all my homework. I am ready to go. So there is an actor in the film, Voicemails for Isabel. His name is Spencer Lord. He plays the pink eye guy that goes on a date with Jill.
But he has been in other movies like Heartland, The Last of Us. He is a young Scott Speedman, the actor from Felicity. And I have here side-by-side photos of Scott Speedman in his youth, and and Spencer Lord tell me he wouldn't have been a better Wes.
Gerri Florence (16:36.982)
Gerri Florence (16:43.49)
That chin, that bum chin and those wavy locks.
Mia Fileman (16:45.617)
Right.
He yeah, he's giving I'm gonna give up my semester for you. Yeah. So I I might not be a fan of the Nick Robinson, but I have come with an alternative.
Gerri Florence (16:53.804)
Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Gerri Florence (17:02.68)
When they reshoot the third version of
Mia Fileman (17:04.497)
Yeah, casting director Mia. Yeah. Yeah.
Gerri Florence (17:08.984)
Bye campaigns. Hello, cast casting director. so let's give some credit where credit is due. What plot twist did you not see coming in in the film?
Mia Fileman (17:20.739)
Ooh, not see coming.
Well, I don't understand why she struggled to make dessert tacos because she's already told Wes that it's her specialty. But then they did this whole montage of her trying to make the dessert tacos for the truck. And I just was like, I did not expect that hardship. Yeah. And then she turned them into nachos. And then I was like, I don't think that this is all that impressive.
Gerri Florence (17:54.35)
Okay. So you didn't see that plot twist coming, nor did you think it was necessary.
Mia Fileman (17:55.43)
Yeah. I did No i Yes, I think it's more the latter. What about you? What about you?
Gerri Florence (18:00.994)
Yeah, right. Well, I'm I actually am a bit embarrassed to say that I didn't see coming that Tyler, the dating podcaster guy, was gonna be a douchebag. I kinda Okay, good, it's not just me. I th and like when he kind of walked in on her leaving the voice no mail and like he kind of handled it all really well. I thought he was like sweet and charming.
Mia Fileman (18:14.041)
Yeah, he seems so nice. No, no.
Gerri Florence (18:29.036)
the trope where he chased her out of the restaurant, like we've seen a million times before. But I mean, obviously, based on the first part of the movie, he wasn't gonna be the guy she ends up with. So I don't know why, but I d I guess I just didn't see coming why he wasn't gonna work out because he did seem almost too good to be true. but I quite really enjoyed that he was this kind of face false fake or false podcaster guy that was actually a huge douchebag and she called him out for it. So I liked it, but I didn't see it.
Didn't see it coming.
Mia Fileman (18:59.96)
Yep, that's a good one. Really good one. What about what what did you spot coming a million miles away? An inevitability.
Gerri Florence (19:09.208)
Inevitability. While poor Wes was really missing his mom's chicken pot pie. How convenient. You're dating a chef. So she makes him his chicken pot pie, and then he has an emotional breakdown as a result. but yes, we we definitely saw that as being a big turning moment for him that was going to happen.
Mia Fileman (19:15.253)
yeah, that's a good one.
Ha ha ha.
Mia Fileman (19:30.999)
Yeah, that was a that was gonna happen. I knew the mention the minute he mentioned this card that he had found on eBay that he was that was gonna round out his collection, the trading card. I was like, he's gonna give up the card for her. I don't know how or why, but somehow it's gonna become a choice between Jill.
Gerri Florence (19:43.71)
a trading curve.
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (19:57.577)
And like, you know, the trading card and he's gonna pick Jill. That's it that was his redemption art.
Gerri Florence (20:01.312)
Yeah. Yeah, excellent choice. And then his friend magically r returned all of the voicemails to her phone, which was important. I'm glad that she had those in the end. I can, you know, suspend my disbelief to accept that that could have actually happened.
Mia Fileman (20:17.198)
I'm surprised Apple hasn't come out I mean, I'm going into campaign territory now, but like why hasn't Apple come out and said, Hey, when you install a software update, you do not lose your voicemails.
Gerri Florence (20:29.538)
Yeah.
Mia, we're not talking about campaigns on off script. You're you're bak you're breaking one of our rules.
Mia Fileman (20:32.238)
yeah, okay, okay, different podcast, different podcast. Okay.
Gerri Florence (20:40.898)
So things we're still thinking about, tell me, what are what's something you can't stop thinking about from this show?
Mia Fileman (20:46.75)
I did not pick this, but the internet has delivered. I didn't notice that Izzy was in the background of the final dance scene, but Instagram has pointed me there. And then of course I went back and watched the scene and there she is. And that was it did make me cry, I'll be honest. That was very sweet.
Gerri Florence (21:08.568)
Very, very well done. and then she says it's her last voicemail. it was so good. Wes just gives me stalker vibes and I can't get around it. And I'm I'm sorry that that actor may forever be ruined for me because of this film. I'd he never even apologize for being a stalker.
Mia Fileman (21:10.699)
Yeah. Yeah.
Mia Fileman (21:16.417)
Yeah.
Mia Fileman (21:28.235)
That is such a good point. He didn't, did he?
Gerri Florence (21:31.492)
there's no there's no apology and really explanation for that.
Mia Fileman (21:35.773)
No, no. yeah, that's a good one. so many Easter eggs in this show. And again, I feel like this is like a female writer attention to detail thing. The pink and purple fireworks, which she mentioned in one of her voicemails to Isabel that she wanted, but he's running across the road to get to her, and the Paramount movie theatre is playing sleepless in Seattle.
Which I thought was a really nice it was a really nice. Yeah. Yeah.
Gerri Florence (22:07.022)
I didn't pick that up.
You are always you always pick up on these things I love. it's a dancing on my own, that song, Robin. And now I have the a real personal affinity for that song, for myself anyway, so I was already in love with it. But that I thought it was so clever, the lyrics, because it obviously foreshadowed that inevitably Jill was gonna be dancing on her own without her sister. And
Mia Fileman (22:16.435)
Arab and yeah.
Mia Fileman (22:33.439)
my god, I did not pick up on that.
Gerri Florence (22:36.222)
I picked up on something that Mia didn't. Guys, can we can we use this as a sound grab?
Mia Fileman (22:37.214)
Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. my god, that's so true. So true.
Gerri Florence (22:43.806)
it made me emotional at the end, for sure, along with how beautiful the scene was anyway.
Mia Fileman (22:50.083)
that's a good one. That's a good one.
Gerri Florence (22:52.63)
So sorry, go ahead.
Mia Fileman (22:56.553)
I just want to say that the they used To Build a Home by Cinematic Orchestra for a lot of the more dramatic scenes, and I thought that that was the perfect soundtrack for those scenes. It's a very iconic song, it's a very well-known song. and so you can't use, I don't think you can use too much of it, but they did it really well.
Gerri Florence (23:21.122)
So overall, we're we w we didn't love it, hits and things that were hit and miss, but I feel like we are a little bit against the grain. Most people did love it. I mean, it did get 87% on on Rotten Tomatoes. So if you're listening, come to the Facebook group that we have for off script and tell us what we missed. Tell us the good bits that we just didn't appreciate in this episode and the things that you would have liked to see and we can continue our conversation there.
Mia Fileman (23:49.514)
And it's not that we didn't love it, it's just that I probably wouldn't rewatch it. What about you, Jerry? Yeah. Yeah.
Gerri Florence (23:58.53)
Yeah, no, it's not it's not on my rewatch list for sure, nor am I kind of telling people to run out and watch it either, where I'm harassing people to watch some other stuff so we can talk about it.
Mia Fileman (24:08.36)
Yeah. Alright, well we're gonna shift gears next episode and we're going to talk about cults. So
Gerri Florence (24:16.694)
Yeah. This is something that I'm harassing people to go watch.
Mia Fileman (24:21.001)
Totally. It's time. It's time to talk about the cults documentaries. So your homework, dear listener, is to go and watch any cult documentary across the streaming platforms. We've got some options. trust me, the false prophet, devotion, obedience, or betrayal.
Gerri Florence (24:43.598)
Keep sweet, pray and obey. Wild wild country. Yeah. And wild walled country. Yeah. Mia does have a hyperfixation for cults, guys.
Mia Fileman (24:46.429)
Yes, good one. Wild wild country was great. That was great. All right, so
I do have a hyperfixation for curls. Well thank you so much for tuning in to off script and we'll catch you next time.
