Frequently Asked Questions
Â
Questions founders ask us
Campaign Del Mar is a strategic brand advisory for established female founder-led brands.
We help founders make better decisions to position, market and grow their brand.
Decisions like what they should become known for and what campaigns they should create to build memorable brands.
Â
Do I need a marketing campaign for my small business?
Yes.
If you have something important to say, launch, reposition or bring attention to, a campaign gives your marketing more impact than simply producing more content.
A good campaign creates a reason for people to pay attention. It brings together a clear objective, a strong audience insight, a message and a creative idea, then gives that idea enough repetition and reach to actually land.
Campaign Del Mar works with established founder-led businesses on campaign strategy, messaging and creative concepts. We’re particularly interested in campaigns that help brands become better known, change perceptions, launch something significant or create demand.
Â
Do I need a marketing coach, consultant or strategic advisor?
Founders can't do it all alone but it is not essential to have a coach or an advisor. It all depends on your skills, capacity and goals.
A coach will usually help you arrive at your own answers through questions, reflection and accountability.
A consultant is often brought in to diagnose a particular problem and recommend a solution.
A strategic advisor is more involved in the decisions themselves. They bring experience, judgement and an external perspective to help you work out what to do next, what not to do, where to invest and how your marketing decisions connect to the wider business.
Campaign Del Mar operates as a strategic advisory. We don’t just give you a framework and send you away to figure it out. We get into the business with you, look at what is actually happening and help you make decisions while they still matter.
Â
Do I need a business coach or a marketing strategist?
If the problem is primarily about your marketing, positioning, audience, reputation, campaigns, messaging or how your brand is growing, you probably need someone with deep marketing expertise.
Business coaches can be enormously valuable, but they aren't necessarily marketing specialists.
If you're deciding how to position your business, which market opportunity to pursue, what your brand should become known for, whether an idea is commercially sound or where your marketing budget should go, you want someone who understands those decisions from a marketing and brand perspective.
Sometimes you may need both.
Â
How do I find a good marketing coach or advisor?
Look beyond follower counts, revenue claims and proprietary frameworks.
Ask what they have actually done.
Have they worked inside marketing teams? Built brands? Managed budgets? Developed campaigns? Made decisions where the outcome mattered beyond whether an Instagram post performed well?
Look for someone who can think beyond a single channel or methodology and who is prepared to tell you when their own service isn't the answer.
Good advice should make your thinking sharper, not make you more dependent on someone else's formula.
Â
When should I hire a strategic marketing advisor?
Usually when the business has outgrown making its marketing decisions reactively.
You may have plenty of marketing activity but no clear sense that it's moving the brand forward. You might be publishing regularly without becoming known for anything in particular. You may have several people executing the work, but you're still the only person deciding what they should be doing.
Growth creates more choices. More opportunities, more channels, more suppliers, more investment and more consequences when you choose badly.
That's often the point where senior strategic counsel becomes valuable.
Â
What if my marketing is busy but not actually working?
This is more common than people realise.
You can have a full content calendar, regular emails, active social channels and a lot of people doing things without having a clear marketing strategy.
The first question isn't usually, “What else should we make?”
It's: what are we trying to change?
Who do we need to reach? What do we want them to think, feel or do? What should the brand become known for? Which activities are contributing to that and which are simply consuming time?
More output is not always the answer.
Â
How do I know if I have a marketing strategy or just a content plan?
A content plan tells you what you're publishing, a marketing strategy tells you why.
It should clarify who you're trying to reach, what commercial objective you're working towards, how the brand will compete, what it should become known for, which messages matter, which channels deserve investment and what you're deliberately choosing not to do.
If your strategy starts with “three Instagram posts a week”, you probably have a publishing schedule.
Â
Do I need an agency or a strategic advisor?
An agency is usually hired to execute marketing activity.
A strategic advisor helps determine what that activity should be doing in the first place.
Agencies may produce your social content, emails, blogs, advertising, design or creative assets. Campaign Del Mar works at the level above that activity: deciding where the brand needs to focus, what it should say, what ideas are worth pursuing and how the pieces should work together.
Many of the businesses we advise already have employees, agencies, freelancers or specialist suppliers doing the work.
Our job is to make sure those people have clear strategic direction.
Â
I already have a marketing team. Why would I need an advisor?
Because having people doing marketing and having someone helping steer the marketing are different things.
Your team may be excellent at design, social media, email, copy, advertising or implementation, but they may not be responsible for deciding the bigger questions.
Where should the brand go next? What should we stop doing? Are we targeting the right audience? Is this opportunity worth pursuing? Does this campaign idea strengthen the brand or distract from it? Do we have a marketing problem or a positioning problem?
An advisor gives the founder and the team another senior strategic brain in the room.
Â
What's the difference between always-on marketing and a campaign?
Always-on marketing is the work you do consistently to stay visible, useful and connected with your market.
Campaigns are concentrated periods of marketing activity designed to achieve something specific.
A campaign might launch a new offer, shift perceptions, grow a category, create demand, reintroduce a brand or bring attention to an important idea.
Campaign Del Mar can help develop the strategy that guides your always-on marketing, but we don't run your day-to-day social media.
Where we become more hands-on is campaign work: developing the strategic direction, audience insight, message and creative concept behind a focused marketing push.
Â
How do I grow on Instagram?
Start by asking whether Instagram growth is actually the business goal.
More followers can be useful, but follower growth on its own doesn't necessarily build reputation, demand or a better business.
A stronger question is: how do more of the right people come to know, remember and trust this brand?
Instagram may be part of that answer. So might email, partnerships, campaigns, podcasts, PR, events, search, referrals or simply having a far more distinctive point of view.
We'd rather help you build the right audience than chase the biggest one.
Â
How do I build an email list?
Give people a compelling reason to hear from you again.
That could be a genuinely useful resource, an event, an original piece of thinking, a campaign, a strong newsletter, a partnership or something only subscribers can access.
The problem with a lot of list-building advice is that it starts with the mechanism “make a lead magnet” rather than the reason someone would actually want it.
A good email list is not simply a database. It's an audience that has actively chosen an ongoing relationship with your brand.
Â
What marketing problems does Campaign Del Mar help solve?
We help founders answer the bigger questions behind their marketing.
Where should we focus? What should we stop doing? How should we position the business? What should we become known for? Are we talking to the right people? Which opportunities are worth pursuing? Do we have the right resources around us? Which channels and tactics make sense for this stage of the business?
We also work extensively on differentiation, messaging, reputation, authority and creative campaign thinking.
Ultimately, the work is about helping good businesses become more distinctive, better known and more in demand — and making sure marketing supports the commercial direction of the business rather than simply keeping everyone busy.
Â
Can Campaign Del Mar help me reposition my business?
Yes.
We often work with businesses whose current positioning no longer reflects the quality, ambition or direction of the brand.
That might mean clarifying who the business is really for, finding a stronger position in the category, sharpening the message, identifying what the brand should become known for or defining territories it can genuinely own.
Our approach to positioning is grounded in commercial reality, customer psychology and reputation.
The goal isn't merely to find a clever tagline. It's to make the business easier to understand, easier to distinguish and easier to choose.
Â
Can Campaign Del Mar help me come up with a marketing campaign?
Yes. Campaign strategy is one of Campaign Del Mar's core areas of expertise.
We start with the business problem or opportunity, then look for the customer or human truth that can unlock the creative idea.
From there, we develop the campaign strategy, message and concept and can work alongside your existing team and creative partners to bring it to life.
We believe strong campaigns give brands something far more valuable than another month of content: a compelling idea people can actually remember.
Â
Does Campaign Del Mar implement marketing as well as advise on strategy?
Strategy and advisory sit at the centre of what we do, but we can support implementation selectively.
Campaign Del Mar can provide implementation support for areas such as email and campaign delivery, and we work with trusted specialists where additional skills are required.
We don't provide ongoing social media management.
Often the most effective model is for Campaign Del Mar to provide strategic direction while your internal team, agency or existing suppliers execute against it.
Â
What is Campaign Del Mar?
Campaign Del Mar is an Australian strategic brand advisory founded by strategic advisor and campaign strategist Mia Fileman.
We work primarily with established female founder-led brands that need senior strategic counsel on positioning, marketing strategy, messaging and creative campaigns.
Our role is not to become your outsourced marketing department.
We work alongside founders and their existing teams, agencies and specialists to help them make better decisions, sharpen the direction and build brands people recognise, remember and want to buy from.
Â
Who is Campaign Del Mar for?
Campaign Del Mar works with commercially active, growth-stage founder-led businesses creating useful and meaningful products and services.
Typically, the business already has momentum. There are customers, opportunities, contractors, employees or specialist suppliers around the founder.
The problem is that many of the important strategic decisions are still being made inside the founder's head.
They may have plenty of people who can execute but very few people around them who can challenge their thinking, see around corners and help decide what the business should do next.
That's usually where we come in.
Â
What size businesses does Campaign Del Mar work with?
We work best with growing businesses that already have commercial momentum.
There is usually an established offer or product, paying customers and a genuine market. The business may have employees, external contractors or specialist partners, multiple revenue streams and more opportunities than the founder can realistically pursue.
The founder also needs to be prepared to make decisions and, where necessary, rethink how the brand is positioned or marketed.
Campaign Del Mar is generally not the right fit for businesses that haven't launched yet, early-stage side hustles or founders looking for basic marketing training.
Â
What industries does Campaign Del Mar work with?
We work across both product and service businesses rather than specialising in one industry.
Our clients have included brands and founders working across retail, design, leadership, creative services, marketing, professional services and other founder-led businesses.
That's possible because much of our work happens at the brand and business level rather than the product level.
We're looking at audience behaviour, positioning, reputation, differentiation, messaging and commercial opportunity, questions that matter whether you're selling tiles, leadership programs or creative expertise.
Â
What is The Village?
The Village is Campaign Del Mar's ongoing strategic advisory for experienced founders and marketers who no longer need more marketing training, they need access to good thinking.
Members have direct one-on-one access to Mia as well as the perspective of a small group of experienced peers and trusted advisors.
The Village is intentionally capped at 15 members at any one time.
It gives founders somewhere to bring the decisions, opportunities and problems that are too important to work through alone.
Â
What's the difference between The Village and working privately with Mia?
The Village is the primary way founders work with Mia on an ongoing basis.
It provides ongoing strategic counsel, including private one-on-one decision meetings, access between meetings and the perspective of a small advisory group.
Mia also takes on a limited number of 1-on-1 strategic projects where there is a clear strategic brief. These may include brand positioning projects, marketing strategy workshops and brand campaigns.
1-on-1Â strategic project work involves significantly more dedicated time and is priced accordingly.
Mia works at senior strategic level rather than as a junior marketer or additional pair of hands.
Â
Does Campaign Del Mar work with businesses outside Australia?
Yes.
Campaign Del Mar is based in Australia and works with founders and businesses around the world.
Most advisory work can be done remotely, with in-person strategy sessions and workshops available for the right projects.
Â
Who is Mia Fileman?
Mia Fileman is the founder of Campaign Del Mar, a strategic advisor and campaign strategist with more than 20 years of marketing experience.
Her career has spanned senior brand, agency and founder roles, including work with Maybelline New York, L'Oréal, BIC and Kraft.
Today she advises founder-led brands on positioning, marketing strategy and creative campaigns and hosts the Got Marketing? podcast, where she examines the strategy and psychology behind marketing campaigns, brands and ideas worth paying attention to.
Her work sits at the intersection of commercial strategy, consumer psychology and creative thinking: helping brands decide not simply how to market more, but what is actually worth saying and doing.
Â
What are some good marketing podcasts for Australian small businesses?
There are plenty of marketing podcasts aimed at business owners and marketers, but they vary enormously in depth and perspective.
Look for shows hosted by people with genuine marketing experience, particularly if you want strategic thinking rather than a steady stream of social media hacks and growth tactics.
Campaign Del Mar produces Got Marketing?, hosted by Mia Fileman. The show examines memorable campaigns, marketing ideas, industry nonsense and the strategy behind brands that get remembered.
Rather than focusing on how to post more content, the podcast looks at why marketing works, the psychology behind good campaigns and how brands can develop better ideas of their own.
Â
How do I know which way of working with Campaign Del Mar is right for me?
We'll look at where the business is now, what you're trying to solve and whether you need ongoing strategic advisory, a focused strategy project or campaign work.
If Campaign Del Mar isn't the right fit, we'll tell you.
